MagTek mDL Tracker

A tracker for state-sponsored mobile Driver's License (mDL) adoption across platforms and digital wallets.

US Passports Support Digital Wallets Nationwide

United States-issued passports can now be added to Apple Wallet, Google Wallet (ID Pass), and Samsung Wallet (via Samsung ID with CLEAR). This national capability is available to any US passport holder and is accepted at over 250 TSA airport checkpoints, regardless of whether a resident's individual state supports digital licenses yet.

Current Coverage Status

US Passports (mPass) Support Matrix

Analysis of federal digital passport credential presentation across Apple, Google, Samsung, and CLEAR, using official terminology and reader transport protocols.

TSA CAT-2 Checkpoint Standard
Reading Mechanism Key:
NFC Only (Proximity Tap) Barcode Only (Dynamic QR) Either (NFC or Barcode / QR)
Valid for domestic TSA identity verification prior to boarding
Apple
Apple Wallet
NFC Only
"Digital ID in Apple Wallet" (Created with U.S. Passport)

Apple provisions a Digital ID by scanning the machine-readable zone (MRZ) on the physical passport's photo page and reading the cryptographic e-Passport NFC chip, accompanied by a Face ID biometric liveness check.

Checkpoint Reader Interaction
  • Reading Transport: Strictly NFC proximity tap (ISO/IEC 18013-5 and ISO 23220).
  • Action: User double-clicks the side button, authenticates with Face ID/Touch ID, and holds the top of iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader's contactless NFC target puck.
  • Barcode / QR: Not supported. Apple does not render an on-screen barcode or optical QR code for passport credentials.
Platform: iOS 26.1+ / watchOS TSA Readiness: Over 250 Airports
Google
Google Wallet
Either (NFC or Barcode)
"ID Pass" in Google Wallet (Digital Passport ID Pass)

Users create an ID pass by scanning their passport's physical security chip via Android NFC and recording a short selfie video to authenticate ownership and prevent spoofing.

Checkpoint Reader Interaction
  • Reading Transport: Dual-mode flexibility. Supports either contactless NFC tap OR dynamic optical QR code scanning.
  • NFC Mode: User unlocks Android phone and holds the rear NFC antenna near the CAT-2 reader terminal for a contactless handshake.
  • Barcode / QR Mode: User opens ID pass, displays the secure dynamic QR code on screen, and presents it to the CAT-2 optical scanner.
Platform: Android 9.0+ TSA Readiness: Over 250 Airports
Samsung
Samsung Wallet
Either (NFC or Barcode)
"Samsung ID with CLEAR" (Digital ID powered by CLEAR)

Built via strategic partnership with CLEAR. Valid U.S. passport holders add their credential into Samsung Wallet under the Quick Access tab, secured locally with Samsung Knox hardware encryption.

Checkpoint Reader Interaction
  • Reading Transport: Dual-mode capability. Supports both NFC proximity taps and on-screen QR codes.
  • Reader Auth:. Reader Authentication is a security and privacy protocol used by Samsung Wallet to establish trust between the credential holder and the requesting verifier. When a verification request occurs, the wallet identifies the relying party and checks its identity against trusted records. If the organization is recognized, the system displays its official name, logo, and requested data fields so you can review the details. If the organization is unrecognized, the wallet flags the entity as Requester Unknown and presents a warning prompt.
  • NFC Mode: Swipe up for Quick Access, authenticate via fingerprint or PIN, and tap phone or Galaxy Watch near the NFC pad.
  • Barcode / QR Mode: Tap "View QR code" on the card details screen to display a high-contrast dynamic QR code for barcode reader scanning.
Platform: Galaxy Knox Devices CLEAR+ Integration: Upgrades to blue tier
CLEAR
CLEAR App
Barcode Only
"CLEAR ID" (In CLEAR App / Vault)

Free mobile digital identity credential created in the CLEAR App Vault by uploading a valid U.S. passport and verifying identity via facial recognition. Designed for both CLEAR+ members and non-members.

Checkpoint Reader Interaction
  • Reading Transport: Strictly Barcode / QR Code Only.
  • Action: User opens the CLEAR App, selects their CLEAR ID, and places the dynamic QR code face down on the TSA CAT-2 glass reader or CLEAR pod scanner.
  • NFC: Not supported natively in the standalone CLEAR App. (NFC is only active when enrolled through Samsung Wallet).
Platform: iOS & Android App Cost: Free digital ID credential

How TSA Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) Reads mPass

CAT-2 inspection pods deployed at airport security checkpoints are equipped with dual physical inspection sensors to accommodate different mobile device architectures:

1. Contactless NFC Target Puck

Interacts via ISO/IEC 18013-5 proximity standards. Used by Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet. The passenger holds their device near the puck; ephemeral cryptographic session keys establish trust without passing device control to TSA.

2. Optical Barcode / QR Scanner

Interacts via camera optical scanning. Used by CLEAR ID, Google Wallet (view QR mode), and Samsung Wallet (view QR mode). The passenger places their phone screen face down on the scanner glass to parse dynamic cryptographically signed tokens.
